of the obama administration which did, in fact, raise the deficit. we all know that deficits are bad things. bigger deaf sets are -- deficits are bad, other things equal, but other things were not remotely close, and there was a cogent rationale for a stimulus package of that size and maybe even for a bigger one. the biggest message of the book to me as the author is this paradox that there were massive government interventions induced and caused by the fact that the private markets ran amok. the private markets that went off the track, the government came in not perfectly, but pretty effectively to try to put things back on track. and yet at the end of the day we witnessed -- and you've all witnessed it as i have -- this quite sharp backlash against, quote, big government in the united states. now, americans have never liked big government. you call anything big government, and americans will be against it reflexively. but there was a reason for the government interventions. it was a market failure in the financial world the likes of which we've not seen since the 1930s. and if we had done
what it is doing, which appear to be improper was actually lawful and the obama administration never expected to be the same position of allies around the world accusing it of illegal activity frankly needs to go to the same effort now and the rules would be to say it's not to stare at the treaty. this is too difficult to negotiate a treaty, but to agree on legal principles such as a country can use lethal force against a terrorist in another country whose threat and attack if that country is unwilling or unable to prevent that thread. in most cases around the world, the countries are able to prevent that thread. they can arrest the person. but in four or five countries, yemen, somalia, pakistan want to get countries around the world to acknowledge the united states right under international law to use force to kill someone in another country who is posing a threat when it can't be addressed in another way. we can get there, but they're just not going to agree to our position unless we go through aggressive international legal diplomacy. it's a great kind of questions. >> and they ar

'm tempted to describe president obama's spending and tax ideas as small ball, but they're worse than that. they represent a conscious decision to neglect some of the most pressing issues that confront our country. you might even say it's a dereliction of duty in the battle to save america. last week, the congressional budget office projected that our gross national debt will increase from $16 trillion in 2012 to $26 trillion in 2023. now, that may seem like a long way off, but just since president obama has been president, the national debt's gone up by 55%, just in the last four years. but if you project that forward to 2023 when some of these young men and women who are working here as pages will be looking at entering the work force and looking at their futures, all they will see ahead of them is debt and a reduced standard of living. this is what lies ahead for all of us unless we embrace real spending cuts and unless we deal with the unfunded liabilities of medicare and social security. now, president obama has a secret strategy for getting our debt under control, we'd all love to he
, the obama administration decided to reassign those defendants to a military commission at guantanamo bay. but through that monthslong controversy there wasn't much exploration of what a military commission at guantanamo bay actually is. the debate pretty much, pretty much, pretty much boiled down to military courts are tough, civilian courts presumably are weaker, and given a choice about who you'd want to deal with alleged terrorists and enemies of the united states, well, it seems like you'd want the tough guys to deal with them. and there was not a lot of discussion about what military commissions are, how they operate, who runs them, those sorts of questions which i think are important for americans to consider when deciding whether this is an experiment that we want to continue or expand or at or drop in the years going forward. so this book is really a story of the development of this project as told through the, a number of vims involved in it -- individuals involved in it, people some who were policymakers at very high levels of government, some are judges. but mainly it's about

to tweet us, it's c-span wj. if you want to e-mail us, journal@c-span.org. what's the obama administration's approach to border security? >> guest: it's very interesting because now border security's becoming very complex. there's a strong border security component to the immigration reform bill that's being discuss ed and to the proposal that was put together by the so-called gang of eight senators who sat down in a bipartisan way and came up with a new proposal. their border security component is somewhat specific, and their whole immigration reform package hinges on securing that border. the obama administration proposal has more to do with interior enforcement, with changing laws of how we enforce verification of employment, the fact that people are here in the united states legally, all that kind of thing. and it's less specific on the border element of that. now, to me the whole hinge centers around what is a secure border. i mean, what is border security? and, in fact, there's no definition. it's subject to different interpretations, and what they're doing in the senate proposal whi
